Solzhenitsyn understood liberty and equality as well as anybody.
It’s pretty simple really:
The political left values equality over liberty.
And the political right values liberty over equality.
Considering their importance, should we be working hard to reconcile the two? Maybe not so fast. That contrast has led to some pretty big improvements over the last couple of centuries. Civil Rights is an example.
Do you really want to live with 100% freedoms where civilization devolves into anarchy? On the other hand, do you really want equality running amok to the extent that a hundred years from now, we’re all robots of equal weight, height, uniforms, jobs, paychecks, etc?
We’re walking a delicate balance.
